CARL FOX
Carl Fox is a self-taught leather craftsman and marquetry artist based in the vibrant artistic hub of London. Working from his studio in Greenwich, he is a member of Cockpit, a collective of diverse artists and makers who excel in their respective disciplines, consistently pushing the boundaries of creative expression. Carl's journey as an artist is a testament to the transformative power of dedication and passion. Originally trained as a hairdresser, he spent over two decades honing his craft skills during his spare time, delving into diverse domains such as interior design, upholstery, textile work, and furniture restoration. However, it was the world of leather craft that captured his heart, igniting a lasting love affair with the medium.
Recognizing his immense talent and potential, Carl was awarded studio space and mentorship by the Worshipful Leathersellers Company and Cockpit. This support allowed him to evolve and refine his artistic practice, ultimately leading to his full-time commitment to the world of art. Carl's artistic process draws inspiration from the clean lines and bold forms of mid-century and brutalist architecture, as well as the innovative principles of modernist design. Influenced by the creative legacies of visionaries like Oscar Niemeyer, Frank Lloyd-Wright, Miro, Mondrian, and more, he employs geometric abstraction to craft captivating and thought-provoking pieces. His work is a visual journey into the realm of memory, as he explores how color and texture alone can evoke emotions, recollections of time and place, without the use of figurative imagery.
Carl Fox's creations are a testament to the power of abstract art to transcend the boundaries of the tangible and touch the soul. Each piece he crafts is an invitation for viewers to immerse themselves in a tactile and emotional experience, where the interplay of geometric forms and texture becomes a language of memory and emotion. In his work, Carl captures the essence of moments, places, and emotions, transforming them into visually captivating and evocative pieces that leave a lasting impression on those who engage with his art.

Unique one of a kind, hand And Laser Cut Marquetry
Size: 53cm x 53cm (Comes Framed)
This marquetry diptych reflects on the quiet spaces between isolation and belonging. Through layers of richly figured veneers, flowering branches unfurling in bloom, and suspended moments of stillness, the work explores the artist’s journey as a queer craftsperson and the ways making has shaped their sense of self.
Craft has long been a grounding force in the artist’s life, a place of refuge, safety, and contemplation. The solitary hummingbird hovers among blossoming branches and tender new growth, moving through a landscape shaped by seasonal change and renewal, mirroring the experience of navigating identity while seeking connection and stability. Each carefully cut, fitted, and assembled fragment of wood, with its distinct grain, colour, and texture becomes an act of presence, a reminder that beauty, resilience, and belonging can emerge through the slow, patient rhythm of making.
