This collection embraces modern gay living. Relationships in settings which for so long were not easily attained. To be gay in a shared living space amongst your own shared possessions - items which were almost alien.

Reflection 9 for “Oh How Queer”
“He stood proud almost 2 centuries ago and unbeknownst to him became the inspiration for Oscar Wilde’s infamous novella ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray”. This was the foundation upon which I painted this portrait, titled Reflection 9 and part of my series Solace. As a gay artist I often pay homage to important queer artists from the past, who paved the way for my freedom of being able to be who I was meant to be. Reflection 9 has roots in the Covid lockdown where I was able to revisit my favourite literature and interpret my emotions viscerally and unobstructed. My biggest inspiration for this paining comes from another queer artist, Francis Bacon, without whom I would be half the artist and person I am today. I was able to take Bacon’s torments and turn them into a Dorian-esque type of portrait where ambiguity and visualisation go hand in hand with the past and the present struggles and expressions of beauty. It is this mix of old and new that I hope the viewer can see and identify with.

The Still life of a Table, centres around the banal and mundane still-life scenes set around the family dinner table. Drawing references from still life painting theory, ‘Looking at the Overlooked’ (Norman Bryson) and viewing the dinner table as an important piece of our basic cultural furniture, the series investigates the concept that objects can be evocative presences because of a particular moment and the circumstances which they come into our lives. This is a device used to create an interchange between memory and imagination.
