Sculpture I | Stanley Onah & Subodh Gour I Resin Sculpture

£1,200.00

Resin Sculpture Finished with Acrylic Paint

Size: 16cm x 31cm (Edition of 1)

Collaborative Sculptures by Stanley Onah and Subodh Gour
From the series From Ancient Braids to Contemporary Fades

In this remarkable collaboration, Stanley Onah and sculptor Subodh Gour bring the language of Onah’s paintings into three dimensions, transforming the symbolic power of hair and adornment into tactile form. Each sculpture is a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted work, a living translation of the artist’s portraits, where strands become structure and stories are shaped in space.

Here, hair takes on sculptural weight: coiled, braided, twisted, or smoothed into form, it becomes both architecture and archive. Gour’s craftsmanship and Onah’s painterly vision merge to honour the same themes that run through the paintings, heritage, identity, and transformation — while inviting viewers to move around the works, to see how light and shadow trace new meanings across familiar motifs.

These sculptures stand as physical embodiments of From Ancient Braids to Contemporary Fades, works that bridge painting and presence, past and present, image and object. They remind us that hair is more than surface: it is structure, story, and sculpture all at once.

  • Native Londoner, Onah’s practice is influenced by his blended British/Nigerian heritage – exuding a strength and grit that speaks to London’s underground art scene. His use of colour and understanding of light oozes connections to the rich tapestry and texture of traditional Nigerian art. His portraits, often starkly back-lit or drenched in a ‘golden hour’ haze allow him to capture a pure emotive dialogue with the viewer.

Onah’s early fascination with comic book artistry is prevalent in his works with a clear nod to artists such as Frank Miller & Dave Gibbons; this marriage of polar aesthetics have allowed Onah to shape an unmistakable visual identity evident in each painting.

Onah’s latest series delves deep into the human psyche, reflecting the intricate emotional landscape experienced in the aftermath of trauma. Drawing from both personal and observed encounters, the artist invites viewers on a journey of contemplation, welcoming them in, to explore life’s profound questions and discover beauty within the depths of the human spirit.
