Original Mixed Media Painting On Paper, Mounted On Canvas

Size: 140cm x 140cm (Sold Framed)

Painfully Shy is a large-scale mixed media work that dissolves the boundaries between figure and ground through a dense tapestry of paper, pattern, and layered surface. The subject emerges only partially, their presence subtly withheld as they appear to recede into the surrounding composition. This near-blending creates a visual tension between visibility and disappearance, suggesting a psychology of retreat, self-consciousness, and quiet observation.

The intricate surface construction builds a field of competing textures and motifs, within which the figure is both embedded and obscured. Rather than asserting presence, the work explores the poetics of hesitation—how identity can fragment, soften, or withdraw within complex environments. Painfully Shy becomes an introspective study of perception itself, where what is withheld carries as much weight as what is revealed.

  • Isalu's path to the art world was anything but conventional. With a background in linguistics and a degree in Italian Language and Literature from NB University in Bulgaria, she initially embarked on a career as an interpreter and translator. However, after living in Florence and later moving to London, she found herself irresistibly drawn to art. As a self-taught painter, Isilu creates works that blend vibrant colors with a touch of whimsy, aiming to captivate and delight her audience. Her art is straightforward and joyful, offering no hidden messages—just pure playfulness. Through exaggerated, stereotypical characters, Isalu breathes life into a unique mix of powdered masculinity and high camp, crafting pieces that are both entertaining and visually striking.
